The Complete Works Series

I'm skimming over this set of games because I've already reviewed the games in which they are based on. Rockman Complete Works is an enhanced Playstation port of each of the original 1-6 Rockman games. Each game comes with bug fixes, an interface upgrade, and a few other small significant changes worth mentioning.

First each game comes with something called "Navi Mode." Navi mode has Beat flying around showing you which direction to go (GO RIGHT DURRRR), and pausing the game will give you hints from various allies of Mega Man.

Next, the games also contain a database of enemies. When you encounter an enemy, they get marked down in your database, and some information about them gets uploaded. They also contain support for the Sony Pocketstation, which is like a little LCD screen used for small minigames. These games allow you to have the bosses battle each other out with the Pocketstation.

Each game also has an art gallery that unlocks after you beat the game. Very cool.

Finally, games 4-6 feature some remixed music and item enhancements for Mega Man in the form of buster upgrades and various speed changes. You can also play without Mega Man's helmet. These are some cool ideas, but they don't significantly change the game enough to warrant a second review for any of them.

The complete works series is in Japanese, so if you can't read the add ons, there is little point going out of your way to play these games. They are certainly collectors items, but not for the sake of the games within them. This was Capcom's way of milking some extra cash out of the Blue Bomber in Japan after the 10th Anniversary had past. In the US, we eventually got the Anniversary Collection which is exclusive to Europe and North America, take that Nippon!
Navi Mode was translated and ported to the Anniversary Collection as well, so if you're curios as to what that mode was like, you can see it as it was intended to be seen. None of the other extras made it though, and that is a bit disappointing, but at least we didn't have to pay for each release separately. These are all great games, but nothing more than Anniversary enhanced ports. Just keep that in mind.
